The Design Corridor "Green Interiors" philosophy echoes an environmentally sensitive mindset, including green ideas in designs where possible. This green game plan emphasises resource efficiency, clever space design, and the creation of visually beautiful, functional, and health-promoting settings.
Chamendri's passion for the environment stems from her youth in Sri Lanka, where she learned to appreciate nature and live sustainably. As the founder of The Design Corridor, she is deeply inspired by her early experiences.
Chamendri acknowledges the pervasiveness of mass-produced furniture created from harmful materials under questionable labour circumstances. These materials, which frequently include hazardous compounds such as petroleum-based foams and formaldehyde, endanger human health and the environment.
In response, Chamendri aspires to build attractive and sustainable homes. Her approach prioritises both comfort and conscience in every design decision, transforming living spaces into loving, eco-friendly retreats.
Thus, the concept of "Green Interiors" was birthed.
Honouring Chamendri's Green Roots
Chamendri was born in the 1980s when things were much simpler. People cared about energy, the planet, and each other, lived more consciously, owned less "stuff," and were conscientious about turning the lights off when leaving a room.
The food consumed was derived through organic methods, from farm to table, free from fillers, steroids, additives, or chemicals.
With the turning of the Millennium, everyone started consuming without regard for how we would pay for it economically and environmentally.
Everything became disposable, and buying new was cheaper than fixing things. We systematically stripped virgin resources from the earth, factories manufactured with little concern for pollution, and cheap toxic products were shipped by the billions across the world, wrapped in excessive packaging with no regard to how they were disposed of after we used them.
Sustainability is the Foundation of "Green Interiors"
At the core of our "Green Interiors" concept is a tenacious commitment to eco-conscious and sustainability principles. For Chamendri, achieving truly green interiors has always been about more than aesthetics—it's a longstanding commitment to planetary and personal well-being.
"Green" goes beyond recycling. It refers to a product's complete lifespan, from extraction to disposal. Our objective is to reduce waste and environmental effects.
From the beginning of a project, we aim to create conscious spaces through compassionate design and find incredible fulfilment in guiding clients through the process.
We take great care to reuse what the client has, guide them to buy the best that would last the years, and patiently select green materials (furniture and accessories) made with sustainable materials.
We endeavour to work with suppliers who use little to no toxic finishes and consider many components, from the wood frames, glues, webbing, springs, foams, and cushions to the fabrics in their production processes. We also ensure they practise fair and safe manufacturing processes.
We examine for sustainable aspects and potential health hazards, ensuring it enhances both function and wellness without costing the earth.
We meticulously curate our material palette, favouring natural and recycled components where possible with minimal environmental impact.
From reclaimed wood and natural stone to low-VOC paints and energy-efficient appliances, every element is carefully vetted to ensure it aligns with our sustainability goals as best we can.
This commitment to conscious construction drives the "Green Interiors" concept from inception to installation.
Functionality and Designing for the Future
Functionality is the second crucial component of the "Green Interiors" approach. For Chamendri, true sustainability extends far beyond aesthetics to embrace functionality. She aims to craft adaptable abodes that buoy clients through ever-changing tides.
We love witnessing families leverage multi-purpose rooms, seamlessly transitioning from spreadsheets to self-care with a furniture shuffle. Clever storage maximises usable square footage for years to come.
We believe that a good design is a green design, and it is worth splurging on things that last for many lifetimes. As such, we encourage our clients to buy less but the best they can afford.
More than any fixture, we strive for future-focused flow, carefully harnessing natural elements like daylight and cross-breezes, slashing carbon footprints while nurturing health, and allowing renovations to remain distant dreams instead of frequent hassles.
We thrive on creative challenges and reimagining spaces with existing furniture and accessories for customers with limited budgets, and prioritise creative solutions over unneeded purchases. This strategy meets our clients' needs and reflects our dedication to environmental responsibility.
Achieving Timeless Elegance by Embracing the Wabi-Sabi Aesthetic
The third pillar of our "Green Interiors" philosophy is timeless elegance grounded in the wabi-sabi aesthetic. Nothing inspires our design process more than finding beauty within nature's imperfect unfolding.
We manifest this philosophy through interiors that allow residents to merge gently with their surroundings.
Rather than chasing fleeting trends, we create spaces that age gracefully, fostering a sense of tranquillity and connection with the natural world.
By incorporating the wabi-sabi aesthetic into our "Green Interiors" approach, we cultivate living environments that are visually captivating, deeply soulful, enduring, natural, lived-in, effortless, and, above all, perfectly imperfect.
The Holistic Benefits of "Green Interiors"
As the world grapples with the urgency of environmental preservation, our "Green Interiors" approach represents a palpable step towards a more sustainable future.
And the tangible benefits of embracing "Green Interiors" are manifold:
From a financial perspective, our sustainable design strategies can reduce energy and maintenance costs, contributing to long-term savings for our clients.
Research has shown that living in a healthy, eco-friendly environment can positively impact physical and mental well-being, improve productivity, reduce stress, and enhance overall quality of life.
Moreover, the inherent value of sustainable, functional, and timeless interiors extends beyond the immediate confines of the home.
By cultivating these eco-conscious and sustainable solutions, we empower clients to embrace solutions that drive global change on both a personal and industrial scale.
Shaping a Sustainable Future, One Interior at a Time
Ultimately, the spaces we inhabit profoundly impact our well-being and our planet's health. While our projects aren't always 100% green, we endeavour to incorporate eco-friendly behaviours whenever possible. However, as designers, we are responsible for creating living environments that reflect our clients' unique needs and aesthetics and minimise their environmental footprint. Therefore, we strive to combine luxury with sustainability. We define luxury as quality above quantity, emphasising healthy and elegant designs—a timeless approach.
Understanding that thoughtful, holistic design solutions pave the path to a sustainable future, we see "Green Interiors" as a transformative approach that seamlessly integrates environmental responsibility, practical functionality, and enduring elegance.
Empowering clients to reimagine their living spaces through this lens enhances their well-being and shapes a more sustainable, soulful future.
Our end game is for clients to awaken to green living's gifts, from savings to serenity. This renews our spirits each day! Their transformed corners bloom seeds of possibility—that sustainable styles need not sacrifice comfort or beauty. We believe that global change buds organically as communities uptake these solutions locally.
